In Remembrance: Pittsburgh Foundation Board Leader William J. Copeland

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 19, 2017 – When Bill Copeland’s service in the 1980s and 1990s on the Foundation’s Board of directors, including extraordinary leadership as chair, was set to end in 1999, the first order of business of the Governance Committee was a unanimous vote to appoint him to the Executive Committee in emeritus status.

Foundation report calls for youth voices in juvenile justice reform

Eight areas identified where youth and stakeholders can improve system     

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 13, 2017 – An eight-month study by The Pittsburgh Foundation has found that youth involved with the Allegheny County juvenile justice system could play a much greater role in shaping prevention and diversion programs. The report also recommends addressing disproportionate system involvement by youth of color, particularly girls, and that youth have a seat the table with human services staffs, law-enforcement authorities and school officials.

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 6, 2017 – On the Martin Luther King Day observance Jan. 16 at the August Wilson Center, I, along with leaders from every facet of community life joined Allegheny County’s chief executive and Pittsburgh’s mayor to reaffirm that our region – one famously built by immigrants – is committed to being open and inclusive, with no one excluded based solely on faith or country of origin.

Announcing the fall 2016 Advancing Black Arts awards

The Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh grants program, a partnership of The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments, has awarded nearly $308,000 in grants to 18 artists and arts organizations. Since its inception in 2010, the program has invested about $4 million to support contemporary artists making art rooted in the black experience, past and present. It is the only grant-making program in the region explicitly dedicated to supporting the elimination of racial disparities within the larger arts sector.

The Foundation’s goal is improving the site as its most powerful communications tool for storytelling about the work of our grantees, donors, professional advisors and staff.

Poet, fashion designer win Carol Brown Awards

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 11, 2016 – Two Pittsburgh-based artists will receive this year’s Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards. A shared commitment of The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments, the awards recognize exemplary artistic achievement by an established artist and an emerging artist each year. The two recipients are each awarded $15,000.

As important as the $5.9 million raised this year is the culture of philanthropy that the events foster regionally among donors, nonprofits and the public. To date, Pittsburgh Foundation-sponsored Days of Giving have raised more than $43 million for regional nonprofits.
