Homeless Children's Education Fund

At any one moment, 600 children in Allegheny county are homeless, staying with their mothers in temporary women's shelters, according to Pittsburgh's Homeless Children's Education Fund (HCEF).  the number probably doubles when accounting for children who sleep in cars, warehouses and abandoned buildings or who "couch surf" at the houses of family and friends.

HCEF is calling for agencies and nonprofit organizations to work together to develop an action plan designed to strengthen the county and state infrastructure to ensure that homeless children have the opportunity to participate in school activities and that they have access to after-school support.
