Donors swarmed to the Internet this morning to contribute to their favorite non-profit organizations during an online giving event and exhausted $300,000 in matching funds from the Pittsburgh Foundation within 30 minutes, foundation officials said.

However some individuals reported problems in accessing the donation site for the Match Day event because of the extraordinary demand.

The foundation kicked off Match Day at 10 a.m. and reported at 10:30 a.m. that it had raised over $1 million for local charities by matching donations of $50 or more with 50 cents to every $1.

Another $100,000 in matching funds reserved specifically for donations to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh was not exhausted by late morning, said John Ellis, vice president for communications for the foundation.

For those who met with delays and problems getting on the site, Mr. Ellis said the foundation was trying to assist them over the phone and asking them to donate despite the fact their dollars would not be matched. "We've just been hit with a huge number of people trying to access the site at the same time. The response is far greater than we hoped for."
