The Pittsburgh Foundation

2016 Day of Giving to be held May 3

PITTSBURGH, March 7, 2016 – The Pittsburgh Foundation will host the seventh annual Day of Giving for Allegheny, Butler and Westmoreland counties’ nonprofits May 3. The date is in conjunction with the national Give Local America event, in which 180 community foundations participate in a 24-hour crowdfunding process designed to empower every person to give back to their local communities by supporting organizations they trust to tackle today’s most critical issues.

The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Day of Giving event also has that goal. From 8 a.m. to midnight, the public will be able to support participating nonprofits through the Foundation’s pittsburghgives.org donation portal.

This year’s event updates previous Day of Giving models in that each nonprofit will be free to raise its own match pool ahead of the May 3 event. There is no limit to how much a nonprofit may raise, and each gift it receives via pittsburghgives.org will be matched dollar-for-dollar until the organization’s match pool is depleted. To add incentive, the Foundation will offer prizes from a $100,000 pool (restricted to Allegheny County nonprofits) throughout the day. This includes bonus grants to participating organizations based on various categories, from most first-time donors to most creative social media campaigns.  The community foundations in Butler and Westmoreland counties are each raising funds for their own match pools, and will announce those closer to the date of the event.

The Pittsburgh Foundation will be offering participants strategic training and tools to assist them in raising the match pool. The training also has been developed to help nonprofits cultivate new supporters while maximizing their existing donor bases through the use of social media campaigns. The goal is to increase general awareness of missions and work records. A video version of the workshop is available below. More details of the assistance will be announced in the coming weeks.

Participating nonprofits must have up-to-date profiles on pittsburghgives.org. To create or update your organization’s profile, e-mail Christopher Pope at popec@pghfdn.org.
