Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank tops in donations and money

PITTSBURGH, Pa., May 15, 2014 – Over 13,000 donors –made contributions during The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Day of Giving last week. The total raised for charitable organizations in Allegheny, Westmoreland and Butler counties was $5,727,000.

Credit card charitable gifts were received from a total of 13,841 individual donations during the event on May 6.  Following the completion of financial reconciliations by Foundation staff, the amount of matching funds for nonprofits in Allegheny County was confirmed at 17.8 cents for every dollar they received. In Westmoreland and Butler, which had a separate match pools, the match is 14 cents and 25 cents on the dollar respectively. 

Due to its unexpectedly high rate of growth since 2009, The Pittsburgh Foundation introduced minor modifications to the event last year.  To ensure a robust match percentage for participating nonprofits, the Foundation determined that only the first $1,000 per individual per organization would be eligible to receive matching dollars from the match pools. In previous years, the cap was $10,000.

In terms of funds raised during the event, the leading organization in Allegheny County was Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank which received donations amounting to $142,851, which qualifies for matching funds totaling $25,480. Next was the Pittsburgh Symphony which received $134,984 (plus match of $19,974); followed by Central Catholic High School, $95,422 ($13,881); Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, $73,872 ($13,176); Light of Life Rescue Mission, $72,210 ($11,998); WQED Multimedia, $71,174 ($12,695); Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania, $69,151 ($12,156); Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, $66,738 ($11,779); The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, $66,363 ($8,430); and Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, $65,685 ($9,433).

For Westmoreland, the top ten nonprofits for funds received were: Seton Hill University, $28,075 ($4,014); Valley Points Family YMCA, $20,475,690 ($2,355); Westmoreland County Food Bank, $16,350 ($2,337); Murrysville Community Library, $13,920 ($1,847); Ligonier Camp and Conference Center, $12,030 ($1,720); Saint Vincent College, $11,300 ($1,401); Stage Right, $10,580 ($1,512); Redstone Presbyterian Senior Care, $9,185 ($1,313); Animal Friends of Westmoreland County, $8,846 ($978); and Westmoreland County Historical Society, $8,508 ($1,216).

For Butler, the top ten nonprofits for funds received were: Penn Christian Academy, $12,375 ($3,188); Community Health Clinic of Butler County, $8,800 ($2,267); Butler County Symphony Association, $6,075 ($1,565); Butler Health System Foundation, $5,475 ($1,410); Strand Theater Initiative, $4,405 ($1,134); Butler Catholic School, $4,380 ($1,128); Lutherlyn, $3,275 ($843); Computer Reach, $2,800 ($721); Mars Planet Foundation, $2,400 ($618); and Victim Outreach Intervention Center (VOICE), $2,247 ($578).

Public donations for Allegheny County during the Day of Giving amounted to $4,473,000 which combined with the match pool of $750,000 created a total of $5,223,000. In Westmoreland, public contributions totaled $362,000 which receives matching funds of $50,000, together totaling $412,000. In Butler, public contributions totaled $72,827 which receives matching funds of $18,500, together totaling $91,326. All donations receive an equal pro-rated share of the match pools.

Since the launch of PittsburghGives in 2009, the on-line site’s giving events have so far raised more than $35 million for the region’s nonprofit organizations.  The PittsburghGives on-line platform will be used to host a Day of Giving to support local arts programs on October 2, organized by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council.
