Michael McNaughton Ban Memorial Fund

Established: 6/2022

Michael McNaughton Ban

Michael was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from North Allegheny High School (NA) in 2004, where he was a gifted athlete, excelling at basketball and baseball and any other sport he tried. He truly distinguished himself, however, as a fiercely competitive and decorated oarsman, on the NA rowing team, winning a national championship in the men’s quad. He graduated from Georgetown University in 2008, where he established himself as a leader and source of esprit de corps on the Hoya lightweight rowing team. Michael was a 2013 graduate of the University Pittsburgh School of Law. After graduation, he went on to work as an attorney for Allegheny Health Network and Highmark Health.

He was also a classically trained bassist who performed in the jazz band and string orchestra in high school and in several bands in college; he took particular joy in playing all types of music with his friends and brother throughout his adult life.

Michael lived every day of his life gallantly, before and after his brain cancer diagnosis. Ever interested in this world and its people, he connected with so many on a deep and personal level, making a profound impact with his humor, intelligence, and zest for life. He leaves behind more devoted friends than can possibly be counted.

Michael passed in May of 2022 at 36 years old. This fund is established in tribute to Michael’s ebullient and magnanimous spirit.  It is dedicated to meeting the needs of sports and music organizations at North Allegheny High School, with a particular focus on ensuring the continued excellence of the NA rowing team and the NA string orchestra, memories of which remained very dear to Michael’s heart throughout his life.
