Charles and Lois Weaver established their fund on New Year’s Eve 1986 to support arts and education in the Pittsburgh area.
Born in 1914 Philadelphia, Charles Weaver graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at 22 and went to work for Westinghouse Electric. He held positions in both Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. before becoming manager of Westinghouse’s new atomic energy division, where he was “a leading pioneer in America’s peacetime development of atomic power,” according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Weaver and his division were instrumental in developing the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine.
He and Lois married in 1979, the same year he retired from Westinghouse. Together, Mr. and Mrs. Weaver travelled the world, flying to South America, the Middle East and beyond. Mr. Weaver was also an avid reader, swimmer, and classical music aficionado until his passing in 2009. Today the Charles and Lois Weaver fund continues to further those passions by supporting educational, theatrical, and musical institutions across the region.
