The Pittsburgh Foundation

August Wilson Legacy Fund

Established: 3/25/2015

Nancy Washington and her fellow community leaders Clyde Jones, Edwin J. Strassburger, Bonnie VanKirk and Cecile Springer established the August Wilson Legacy Fund in the fall of 2015 in response to the re-opening of the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in downtown Pittsburgh.

The Fund's mission is to preserve, present, interpret, celebrate and shape the art, culture and history of African Americans in the spirit of the late playwright August Wilson, a two-time Pulitzer winner who wrote mostly about the 20th-century African-American experience from the perspective of growing up in the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

Starting in 2019, the Fund will support eight-week, paid internships for two highly motivated Pittsburgh-area high school students at the Carnegie Museum of Art. The internships are open to rising juniors or senior high school students, with a preference for students of color.

Applicants should be curious about and have a keen interest in art and art museums but do not need prior knowledge of how art museums work. The internships provide on-the-job experience for students who learn from and work alongside museum staff in a variety of professional roles. Interns build skills for future educational opportunities and develop an understanding of art museum careers.
