Journey Forward - Pittsburgh Fund

Established: 2/6/2015

The Journey Forward Fund was established by the Senita family to bring critical rehabilitation programs to those with spinal cord injuries in the southwestern Pennsylvania region. Following an accident in 2006, Claire Senita became paralyzed from the neck down. After years of working to regain strength and mobility, Senita and her family want to provide the Pittsburgh region with Journey Forward, a Boston-based wellness program that gave Senita the resources and support that she needed in order to regain independence and improve her quality of life.

Senita believes that people with spinal cord injuries deserve care without having to leave their support network of families and friends. After four years of training with Journey Forward, she was able to stand unassisted and take steps with assistance in addition to eliminating a large majority of secondary complications from the injury. However, since returning home, she has lost that function and has had an increase in complications from paralysis. She plans to combine her passion for making a difference with her business management skills in order to establish a Journey Forward center in Pittsburgh, which will be the first exercise center of its kind in the region. Her goal is to raise $350,000 to fund equipment, staff and initial operating costs. Once the center is self-sustaining, grants will be awarded to cover costs of care for clients in need. Claire believes that this center will provide people in the region with an incredible opportunity to gain or regain a sense of independence.
