Individual/Collective Exposure awardee: $20,000

This grant will be used to further develop DS Kinsel’s "Brain Bone Blood," a collection of mixed media paintings and artifacts.

DS Kinsel’s foundation lies in hip hop culture, which has propelled his creative expression across various mediums, with painting being his primary focus. Themes such as urban traditions, hip-hop, informalism, cultural re-appropriation and the preservation of space have become the cornerstones of his work.

Kinsel has drawn inspiration from action-oriented methodologies evident in Project Rowhouse in Houston, the Eastside Cultural Center in Oakland, California, the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago and AS220 in Providence, Rhode Island.

“Brain Bone Blood” is meant to reflect the existence of Black jujuism and Black excellence. The project primarily presents a wide-ranging set of canvas paintings depicting bold epicene forms. Each work displays a martyr or ancestor experiencing dissection, an act of forced sacrifice of these body forms.  The works exist as large-scale paintings and across multiple canvas surfaces.

Kinsel’s ultimate objective is to employ his practice, which emanates from a place of joy and provocation, to craft impactful encounters that shape and redefine the cultural landscape.
