Explore Series: advocating for our environment

Clean air and potable water are essential elements of any metro area. But in parts of the southwestern Pennsylvania region, acceptable standards have not been met and near-daily news reports highlight the dangers.
Lead in drinking water. Dangerous levels of particulate matter in the air. Toxic sediment and erosion from natural gas sites into tributaries and rivers. The biological impact of these threats – as well as the ubiquity of oil and gas industries in our region – require vigilant monitoring and civic responsibility by all parties.
At this Explore event, our Foundation embraces its role as convener and funder to raise public awareness of these critical environmental issues.
The Foundation’s Center for Philanthropy invites our donors (by invitation) to participate in a frank assessment of our area’s environmental challenges and solutions with: Dr. Karen Hacker, director of the Allegheny County Health Department; Michelle Naccarati-Chapkis, executive director of Women for a Healthy Environment; Joylette Portlock, executive director of Sustainable Pittsburgh; and Danielle Crumrine, executive director of Tree Pittsburgh.
