In 1920, the former Greensburg High School, now Greensburg-Salem High School, honored Morrison Underwood with a life-size oil picture of him hung in the building. His contributions both before and after his death benefited the school district and the people of Greensburg. The life-size oil painting captured Underwood sitting in a chair with his usual expression, always alive with sympathetic interest that endeared him to hundreds of friends.
Underwood was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and moved to Greensburg as a young boy. He was described as the epitome of “true American manhood,” according to his Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Obituary. Morrison married but his wife died before they had children. He dedicated his life to giving back while still living as opposed to giving back after his death as most wealthy individuals did during that time. Morrison died in Carlisle on Feb. 25, 1885 at age 90.
He established his fund in November 1879 to benefit Greensburg High School, Westmoreland Manor and Greensburg Grammar School. The fund was first created under The Greensburg Fund Foundation, which is an endowment fund within The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, an affiliate of The Pittsburgh Foundation.
