The Hempfield Parks & Recreation Fund, a fund of The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, was established to support the long-term growth of parks and recreation in Hempfield Township. Hempfield Township, established in 1773, has grown from a rural farming community to a diverse mix of residential, retail and commercial developments. The municipality recognized the need to enhance and expand recreational opportunities and committed a portion of the sale of the former Hempfield Township Municipal Authority towards the long-term goals of recreational growth.
The fund is governed by a board of trustees, comprised of the elected members of the Hempfield Township Board of Supervisors. The trustees focus on supporting the development, conservation, and expansion of the parks, greenspaces and trails within Hempfield Township’s 76-square mile area. With guidance from the Department of Parks & Recreation professional staff, the board of trustees evaluate impactful projects, parcels and programs that will have the greatest impact on recreational projects and programs for the township’s 41,000 residents.
Recreation grants from the Hempfield Parks & Recreation Fund have supported major rehabilitation projects at Hempfield Park, supported local nonprofit youth sports leagues and provided funding for the planning of new parks and greenspaces in the community. Recreation grants are only distributed through the Department of Parks & Recreation for support of Hempfield Township parks, programs and initiatives.
Continued community support of the Hempfield Parks & Recreation Fund will further enhance recreation and leisure opportunities for generations to come. Connect with Hempfield Township at www.hempfieldtwp.com and www.facebook.com/hempfieldtwp.
