The Sally Kalson Courage in Journalism Fund award will be for a piece of work or series of works published in 2020, either from print, broadcast or social media, produced by a writer living in, working in and writing about issues relevant to Pennsylvania. The work(s) will embody the characteristics of Sally Kalson’s body of work – fearlessness, fortitude and excellence in taking on issues of our time. Read more about the award.
The award is open to journalists from broadcast, print or online news operations.
The subject of the story or series of stories must be produced by a writer(s) living in and/or working in Pennsylvania, with preference given to writers living/working in the following counties of western Pennsylvania: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland.
A piece or series of pieces that aim to achieve justice in any field.
Work that adheres to journalistic principles. For example, a piece that goes through some type of fact-checking and/or editing process.
An individual can either self-nominate or be nominated by a colleague, supervisor or someone else in the field of journalism.
The nominator must fill out a form that answers questions articulating why this story or series of stories deserves consideration and demonstrates the work’s impact.
