The Sally Kalson Courage in Journalism Fund award will be for a piece of work or series of works published in 2019, either from print, broadcast or social media, produced by a writer living in, working in and/or writing about issues relevant to the Western Pennsylvania 10-county area. The counties are: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland. The work(s) will embody the characteristics of Sally Kalson’s body of work – fearlessness, fortitude and excellence in taking on issues of our time.
The award is open to journalists from broadcast, print, or online news operations.
The subject of the story or series of stories must be in and/or impact Pennsylvania.
A piece or series of pieces that aim to achieve justice in any field.
Work that adheres to journalistic principles. For example, a piece that goes through some type of fact-checking and/or editing process.
An individual can either self-nominate or be nominated by a colleague, supervisor, or someone else in the field of journalism.
The nominator must fill out a form that answers questions articulating why this story or series of stories deserves consideration and demonstrates the work’s impact.
