Pittsburgh Promise gets $8.8 million boost

The Pittsburgh Promise has announced $8.8 million in new funding for the scholarship program for Pittsburgh Public Schools graduates, moving it closer to its 10-year, $250 million fundraising goal. The new pledges, made public at a fundraising gala Thursday night, include $1.2 million raised through the event, $5 million from the Pittsburgh Foundation, a $1 million challenge grant from the Beacon Foundation, $750,000 from the Hillman Foundation and $500,000 from BNY Mellon, plus others.

Effective approaches to managing discipline, academic support during the school day and math instruction/offerings were viewed as the top three areas needing improvement.

Executives-in-residence lend a hand to Pittsburgh nonprofits

The Forbes Funds’ executive-in-residence program, launched in 2014, provides nonprofits with a seasoned professional to help them work through issues like strategy, finances and staff management. A recent grant of $100,000 from the Allegheny Foundation, the program is expanding and adding four more executives-in-residence who will work part-time to assist nonprofits in the Pittsburgh region.
