Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company is a creative home rooted in the African American community and dedicated to uplifting the voices, stories and artistry of Pittsburgh. We champion the work of local racially and culturally diverse playwrights, producing new plays and Pittsburgh‑themed works that reflect the richness, complexity and history of our city.
Our company is built on the belief that theatre thrives when people of all backgrounds create together. We provide a nurturing, collaborative environment for artists on and off the stage and we cultivate audiences that reflect the full diversity of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods. By bringing people together through storytelling, we strengthen civic connection and build bridges across communities.
PPTCO is committed to developing a broad, inclusive community of theatre professionals—playwrights, directors, actors, designers, technicians and administrators—supported by a management team and board that share our values of representation and equity.
As a center for learning, discovery and artistic growth, we create opportunities for emerging and established artists alike. We champion new work, encourage experimentation, and open doors for creators who may not otherwise see their stories produced, including artists from marginalized communities and those who are self‑taught or new to the field. Our mission is to ensure that Pittsburgh’s stages reflect the voices, cultures and experiences of the people who call this city home.
