Two-Part Series: Budgeting and Financial Management 102

Strong financial practices open doors. They help you secure funding from foundations and government agencies, and they show funders your organization is healthy, transparent and ready to grow. That confidence starts with knowing how to build budgets, set up smart financial controls and stay on top of reporting and compliance.

We invite you to join us for Budgeting and Financial Management 102, a practical two-part session created to help you feel confident understanding, preparing and reviewing the financial documents that matter most. Whether you are brand new to budgets or need a refresher, we will make nonprofit finances feel less intimidating and a lot more empowering. 

The sessions will be led by two members of The Pittsburgh Foundation's Finance and Operations Department, who bring decades of combined experience to the conversation.

Budgeting and Financial Reporting

Financial Compliance

Please bring copies of your own financial reports for reference and something for notetaking. When you register, be sure to include any questions you would like our facilitators to address in advance. 

Tentative Agenda (for both sessions)

  • 9 to 10 a.m. - Arrival, breakfast and networking.
  • 10  to 11 a.m. - Presentation.
  • 11 a.m. to noon - Questions and hands-on engagement.

This session is designed for: 

  • Nonprofits with annual budgets of $750,000 or less.
  • Organizations applying for grant funding.
  • Fiscally sponsored groups.
  • Board members.
  • Individual artists and collectives.
  • Anyone involved in nonprofit finances.

What You Will Learn
Across both sessions, we will cover the essentials that lead to stronger fiscal health and transparency, including: 

  • Building realistic, mission-driven budgets.
  • Financial forecasting and budget projections.
  • Understanding key financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow).
  • Audit vs. independent review.
  • Managing and tracking donor gifts.
  • Unrestricted vs. restricted gifts.
  • Best practices for financial reporting and compliance.
  • Common pitfalls and how to avoid them.
  • Financial tracking tools.


Parking Information

To park in the garage, enter at the Visitor Entrance of Parking Gate 3 or 4 on South Commons (the big orange garage entrance). Park near the Plaza Concourse elevators, where you will find the parking kiosk in front of the elevators. Take the elevator up to the (P) Plaza Level.

Use the central elevator to reach the main Plaza Level on the Concourse. CoLab 18 is Suite 100, located on the Plaza Level inside the Main Concourse of Nova Place. The closest markers are the security desk and the "Parking Garage Central" elevators, both located in the very center of the main level. CoLab 18 sits diagonal to the security desk.

If you use street parking or any street entrances, enter through any of the glass door entrances to reach the Plaza Level inside the Main Concourse of Nova Place.

Bring your parking ticket with you, and we will provide validation.
