Raymond R. and Edna Gies Artz Fund

Established: 7/1/1977

Raymond Artz of Fox Chapel created a Field of Interest Fund to support the care of the neglected and needy in our community, particularly the aged and orphans. He passed away on January 29, 1976, at the age of 84.

Unfortunately, little is known of Raymond or his wife Edna, although one may safely surmise they were Pirates fans. Raymond had the distinction of being a batboy for the team during the 1909 World Series when they won against the Detroit Tigers in seven games, capturing their first championship of the modern Major League era and second in the club's history.

During his life, Raymond was an executive of Vanadium Steel Corp. in Latrobe, Westmoreland County, a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in East Liberty and The Pittsburgh Athletic Association. He served as an ensign during World War I and was a professional baseball player during the 1920s in the Central League of Western Pennsylvania.
