A. Sanford and Alice were a loving and devoted couple throughout their 57 years of marriage. So strong was their bond, friends and family were not surprised when Alice passed away on May 11, just three months after her husband who died on Feb. 7, 1991. He was 89, she was 85.
Alice was initially a pharmacist, but later went into retailing, spending most of her career working at Kaufmann's where she was a highly respected dress buyer. "She was a beautiful and charming woman who was adored by her husband and family, but she also had an inner strength that made her become a successful career woman long before that was a common occurrence," a friend says.
A. Sanford graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and practiced law for 66 years, specializing in estate law. He had an office in the Law and Finance Building, Downtown, until his death.
The Levys were active in their community as members of Rodef Shalom Congregation, The Carnegie and the Pittsburgh Symphony Society. A. Sanford was also a member of the B'nai B'rith Lodge, The Hebrew Institute of Pittsburgh and the Jewish Community Center.
The Levys shared their estate with family, friends and local charities. The Pittsburgh Foundation received $1 million to create the Unrestricted Fund in their name to give back to the community that had given them so much.
