George S. Daugherty, the husband of Isabel Daugherty, was one of Pittsburgh's many successful entrepreneurs. He founded the George S. Daugherty Company based in both Pittsburgh and New York, which supplied "quality canned fruits and vegetables for schools and colleges," according to an ad placed in the 1937 yearbook for the Centenary Collegiate Institute of Hackettstown, New Jersey.
George S. Daugherty Jr., was born in 1911 to George and Isabel S. Daugherty. He graduated from Shadyside Academy in 1931 and Brown University in 1935. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the University Club. For many years, he worked with his father at George S. Daugherty Company, and was later associated with the Blackwell Stevenson Food Brokerage Company and Fuchs and Blackwell Company. He was a Deacon, Trustee, and Elder at Southminster Presbyterian Church, where he was a member since 1948. He was a member of the Masons and delivered food for Meals-on-Wheels from their church pantry with his daughter Marilyn Isabel Daugherty, who passed away on March 14, 2011. He and his wife Virginia donated stained glass windows in Southminster Presbyterian, in memory of the Daugherty's and Virginia's parents, the Koch's, and in honor of Marilyn Daugherty.
George S. Daugherty established this fund in 1950 in memory of his wife Isabel, with the intention of supporting the East End Baptist Church in Pittsburgh.
Now that the church has closed, the fund supports the Rankin Christian Center. The Rankin Christian Center is a non-profit, faith-based center in Rankin Borough, east of Pittsburgh. The center, founded in 1904, ministers to the physical, social, cultural and spiritual needs of children, youth and families by supporting the needy, regardless of faith, of this economically disadvantaged neighborhood.
George S. Daugherty Jr. died on Sept. 3, 2004 at the age of 93.
