The Pittsburgh Foundation

Charles H. Spang Fund

Established: 6/9/1966

Charles was a prominent Pittsburgh business leader and the Director of several Pittsburgh financial institutions and corporations, including Spang, Chalfant and Company. He died on Feb 15, 1919.

The $17 million that went into establishing the fund was considered one of the largest in The Pittsburgh Foundation's portfolio in 1966.

"It is worthy to note the foresight of Mr. Spang," said Robert D. Ferguson, Executive Vice President and head of the Trust Division of Pittsburgh National Bank. "Recognizing that the needs of a community will change, he provided that the remainder of his estate be used for the general charitable benefits of Allegheny County instead of specifying particular charities which during the intervening 53 years might easily no longer be required or even exist."
