The Dan Filo Athletic Memorial Fund was created in 1990 in honor of Dan Filo. In his will, he requested that a portion of the money he had at the time of his death be used for charitable purposes through the creation of this fund.

Filo requested that the funds be used to purchase “trophy awards for students of West Mifflin Area School District who have excelled in athletics.” Youth, sports and the West Mifflin community were all very important to Filo.

For 35 years, Filo sponsored the Filo Athletic Club in West Mifflin. The club included football, baseball, basketball, soccer and Little League teams. The Filo Athletic Club encouraged youth and adults to continue to be active and involved in athletics.

As a resident of West Mifflin, Filo was involved in several community organizations; he served as president and charter member of the West Mifflin Lions’ Club and the West Mifflin Recreation Board. He was also a charter member of the West Mifflin Social Club and the Steel Valley Regional Planning Commission. In addition, Filo was a general member of the Mon-Yough Boy Scout Council, the Steel Valley Vocations and Special Education School Board, the Senior Citizen’s Club, the Retirees’ Bowling League and the Homeville Fire Company #1. He also served as treasurer for the West Mifflin Democratic Committee for 30 years and as a committeeman for District 5 for 28 years.

Filo’s role in the West Mifflin community continues through his fund and the encouraging trophies it awards to students excelling in athletics.
