Established in 2002, the Bob Prince Charitable Fund benefits Merakey Allegheny Valley School, the Betty and Bob Prince Endowed Scholarship at Grove City College, and the Larry Sylvester Endowed Scholarship at UPMC Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.

Bob Prince, who died in 1985, was a legendary Pittsburgh Pirates broadcaster and beloved member of the Pittsburgh community. Known for his stories and on-air antics as an announcer, Prince was the Voice of the Pirates for 28 years and was voted Sportscaster of the Year 14 years in a row.

Prince co-founded Merakey Allegheny Valley School for children with disabilities and served as its director and executive vice president.

“I’m not a member of a charity in name only,” Prince once said, according to the Pittsburgh Press in his 1985 obituary. “Many people join such organizations just to see their name in print and to say they belong. I join to work.”

Prince’s wife, Betty, died in 2007. She was a graduate and alumni trustee of Grove City College and later became president of the alumni council. Her daughter described Betty in her obituary as someone who “loved her church, loved her college.” Betty was a long-time board member at Presbyterian Senior Care Homes in Oakmont and Washington, as well as an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
