Established in 1997, the Gilbert and Margaret McMaster Fund benefits the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, funding scholarship aid for medical students. The fund also has given to the Community Empowerment Association Inc. and Neighborhood Allies.

Dr. Gilbert B. McMaster attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and was an anesthesiologist at Allegheny General Hospital for many years. He served in the Army in both World War II and Korea. He retired from his practice at Washington Hospital in 1988, and he died in 2007.

McMaster grew up in a family of doctors—his father was a general physician who also earned his medical degree at The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. McMaster created the Fund to benefit Pitt students who were just starting out their careers, as he once did.

“We gave because we think Pitt is an important part of the community,” McMaster said in an interview with Pitt Med quarterly magazine in 2001. “We felt a scholarship fund was most appropriate, considering the debts these students rack up.”

McMaster’s wife, Margaret, died in 2005. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters of Mt. Lebanon and of Washington County, as well as a member of the Cranberry Community Presbyterian Church.
