This fund was established in July 1991 as part of the Greensburg Foundation, which is now a fund at The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County.

Initially, more than $100,000 was raised to erect a monument in honor of 13 soldiers of the 14th Quartermaster Detachment who died in a Feb. 25, 1991 missile strike in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The memorial was completed in November of 1992. President George H.W. Bush said that “the citizen-soldiers of the 14th Quartermaster Detachment embarked on their mission with the courage and dedication that are the hallmarks of America’s Reserve forces.”

The fund now provides scholarship support to Westmoreland County High School students who are considering a career within a military branch or who have a parent who is a veteran or currently serving in the United States Army.
