ABOUT ANDY

Andrew Broadwater

Andrew Broadwater was your typical teenager who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in May of 2004. He was a three-sport athlete at Geibel Catholic High School, playing on the golf, basketball and baseball teams respectively. His diagnosis was originally thought to be a sports related injury. A biopsy revealed a bump on the outside of his fibula and tibia was a cancerous tumor. Osteosarcoma as described by Indiana University is a bone tumor that can occur in any bone, but most frequently occurs in the long bones of the arms and legs near the growth plates.

Shortly after his diagnosis Andrew started taking chemotherapy treatments at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Initially, Andrew’s outlook was promising. Everyone close to him was hopeful he would prevail over this disease. This only proved to be a false sense of hope as Andrew’s response to the chemotherapy declined. In September 2004 Andrew opted to have knee replacement/tumor extraction surgery.  Results of the surgery proved to be successful but the sense of hope was quieted as a later CT scan revealed that the cancer had spread to his hip and lungs.

On February 5, 2005, it was concluded that treatment would stop and Andrew would live out his final days with his family and friends. On Sunday June 19, 2005, Andrew passed away.

With help from the Broadwater family as well as The Pittsburgh Foundation and Indiana University the Andy B. Fund has been created to raise money, awareness and hope for those fighting this disease.
