Health and Wellness Weekend
When: Friday, September 12 - Sunday, September 14, 2014
Where: Various locations in and around the Hill District
State Rep. Jake Wheatley, D-Allegheny, will host a Health and Wellness Weekend Sept. 12-14, with an array of interactive events designed to increase health awareness and motivate participants to live an active, sustainable and healthier lifestyle.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
- Thelma Lovette YMCA will offer a free day for families from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
- "The Economic Health of Our Communities" business reception/mixer at the Lexus Club at the Consol Energy Center to be held from 5 - 7 p.m. Partners for this event include the Hill Community Development Corporation and the New Hill District Business Association.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13
- 5K UPHill Walk/Run in the Hill District - begins at Freedom Corner (Centre Ave. at Crawford St.) starting at 9 a.m. and will proceed up Centre Ave., turnaround at Aliquippa St., and finish back at Freedom Corner. Free parking provided at Melody Lot (upper lot) at the Consol Energy Center starting at 7:30 a.m. Awards ceremonly immediately following the race at Freedom Corner. - Rep. Wheatley's annual Community Appreciation Day featuring free food, children’s activities, jobs fair, line dancing extraordinaire DJ Roland Ford, a step exhibition, a spoken-word poetry slam, live local entertainment, and free prize giveaways will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kennard Field, off Reed St. between Kirkpatrick and Soho Sts. in the Hill District. Partnering with the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank, and in connection with Hunger Awareness Month, Rep. Wheatley’s office plans to host a food drive at this event and share healthy recipes. Attendees are urged to bring a canned or non-perishable food item to be donated.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14
- Health Expo for African American Living will be hosted at the Thelma Lovette YMCA offering health screenings, vendors, cooking demonstrations, children obstacle course, equipment and class orientations, the Pitt Mobile Science Bus, a live DJ, a mural painting for families and kids, as well as Health Jeopardy and Food Bingo for children. Free water bottles and pedometers will be available while supplies last. Free prizes will be given away at 4 p.m.
