East Liberty's "Joy of Life" sculpture

Virgil Cantini, the artist behind Pittsburgh's iconic "Joy of Life" sculpture in the East End, once said that the fountain's figures, "with their arms locked together, [represent] the strong and the weak, the affluent and the poor, the educated and the underprivileged."

The East End, Cantini explained, "is one society and one community.”

This spring, join The Pittsburgh Foundation in the heart of that community for a special look at two storied neighborhoods: East Liberty and Larimer.

With guidance from the expert staff at East Liberty Development Inc., we’ll embark on a trolley tour that examines the area’s triumphs and challenges — raising questions of history, livability and economic development along the way. What successes might our region replicate? What lessons need to be learned? How do we as leaders, philanthropists and neighbors build a Pittsburgh in which 100 percent of our community can live, work and thrive?

Join us after the tour for a reception in the courtyard at East End Cooperative Ministry, where the Foundation’s President and CEO, Maxwell King, will discuss 100 Percent Pittsburgh — the neighborhood-based campaign to ensure that the 30 percent of Pittsburghers who’ve been left out of the region’s renaissance have opportunities to be full participants in the community's new economy.
