James and Dorothy Dickson smiling.James S. Dickson and his wife, Dorothy, lived lives dedicated to care and generosity towards their family, friends, colleagues, students and ministries. During his 41-year career with the Pittsburgh Public Schools, James S. Dickson was a teacher, counselor and administrator. He led with vision, passion and a drive to pursue goals and help others.

Jim was known for his “Principal’s Adventures,” at Prospect Middle School. Each month he would take a group of students and teachers on excursions—canoeing, downhill skiing, repelling, backpacking, sailing and even riding in an airplane he piloted—to inspire them to explore and to reach new heights in their experiences and educational endeavors.

Jim also taught Sunday school and tutored many students throughout his life. He spent his time helping youngsters with their schoolwork, never accepting money, though he would accept a homemade pie or some cookies from time to time. He was known in the community for his kindness. Jim was willing to think the best of each person he met and was always willing to help them become the best they could be.

Jim and Dorothy supported one another as a team. They were both active members of Northmont United Presbyterian Church for 60 years, and Dorothy was regularly involved in church groups and community activities. Dorothy’s church and family were the heart of her life, and her pride and joy were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Barbara Bain created the James S. and Dorothy Dickson Scholarship in her parents’ name to carry on their legacy of altruism, and to advance the cause of her father’s passion for educating students and encouraging young people to develop their talents. With this scholarship, Bain hopes to emulate her father’s commitment to assisting students in developing their passion for educational pursuits, and encouraging students to use their newly acquired skills to enrich the lives of others.
