Individual/Collective Exposure awardee: $20,000

This grant will be used for Sobia Ahmad’s creation of a series of four (6 ft. x 3 ft. each) mixed media experimental, abstract weavings titled “On Tender Ground.” Guided by the artist’s interest and research in spiritual ecology, everyday materials and the domestic space, these weavings will be made from recycled and repurposed materials, such as scraps of paper, fabric and natural dyes.

Through her interdisciplinary art practice, Sobia Ahman explores the transcendental power of everyday experiences, objects and practices by employing processes that are slow and contemplative in nature, ranging from weaving circles and community workshops, to darkroom still photography and hand-processed motion picture film.

The artist says that from the meditative potential of these processes, she hopes to understand how tactility, slowness and devotion might activate our inner lives and help us experience various spiritual dimensions of social and ecological engagement.
