NOVA PLACE: ‘A NEW URBAN FABRIC’
Shimmering in Alcoa aluminum, Allegheny Center Shopping Mall was billed as Pittsburgh’s “only in-town regional shopping center” at its opening Sept. 12, 1966. The mall was the keystone of Allegheny Center, a bold, mixed-use development that would “revive [the North Side’s] elegant spirit.”
The Center thrived for more than 20 years until new housing and retail developments in the North Hills supplied consumers with new options. After a five-year renovation, the Center reopened in 2017 as Nova Place and aimed to fulfill another wish of the original developers: to become “a new city” within the city. Mayor Bill Peduto said upon the new plan’s unveiling in 2015: “We’re here with a new vision, a vision of how we can take this failed model of trying to keep up with the suburbs and to create around it a new urban fabric.”
We invite our current fund holders to see what’s new on the North Side beginning with a guided tour of Nova Place – "Pittsburgh’s Innovation Space."
