Tresa Murphy-Green
First-time Exposure awardee: $5,000
This grant supports Tresa Murphy-Green’s work as a DJ, including recording and sharing of mixes to a national audience and to support development in metal smithing and writing.
Born and molded in the Hill District, Tresa is a multidisciplinary artist. As one who hones many mediums, their intentional practice roots itself in core values that center the liberation of Black queer folx through ritual and worship.
Icy Pisces FKA Deejay Aesthetics operates under the philosophy that dance floors are sanctuaries and should be regarded as such. Growing up in Pittsburgh, Tresa always found solace in the arms of Black queer folx and spaces that exclusively cater to black queer femmes, which have always been few and far between. Started in 2018, Icy Pisces blends black dance music (Jersey club, Baltimore club, ballroom, ghetto house, juke/footwork, etc.) with top 40, hip-hop and R&B to create the spaces they've always craved. Spaces where queer, femme presenting & identifying folks can feel free, safe, seen and feel beautiful.
A poet, deejay, crafter and cultural curator, Tresa began the Aesthetics Collection in 2017. This is a line of wearable sculptures created from gemstones and copper wire. They hope to continue to hone skills across mediums, with plans to take a metalsmithing class and attend writing workshops.
