Chief Information Officer (CIO)
Position Status: Full-Time, Exempt Permanent

Salary: $230,000
POSITION SUMMARY
The chief information officer (CIO) leads and manages the information technology (IT) function for the Foundation. Setting the strategic direction of the Foundation’s technology, working closely with its senior and executive leadership, including the president and CEO, and members of the board, the CIO seeks to provide pragmatic systems and technology solutions that advance the mission of The Pittsburgh Foundation. The CIO manages staff to operate and maintain the systems in supporting all staff as well as the constituents we serve in a complex and demanding environment.
The CIO will think creatively and operate using a continuous improvement lens, to position TPF as a best-in-class foundation. The CIO will play a key role in setting IT strategy and creating project and implementation plans, including leading and participating in internal cross-departmental teams. In this capacity, they will lead changes within an already dynamic operation with the appropriate application of technology and automation to assist in keeping the Foundation at the forefront of providing superior donor, grantee and community service.
The CIO must be creative, innovative and possess initiative and drive with broad, relevant technical knowledge and good management expertise, as well as a willingness to provide hands-on service delivery. The CIO supervises employees and vendors that support the ongoing maintenance of systems, including ensuring smooth operation of the core ERP system encapsulated by NetSuite, Salesforce and a cloud-based data warehouse. The CIO directly interacts with Foundation staff and visiting members of the community as the secondary source for support.
Recently, the Foundation has undertaken a process with an external consultant to assist in remediation of the implementation of a technology plan to address the existing and evolving needs of the organization.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads the overall management and strategic direction for all information technology services and infrastructure and is accountable for technology usability, including data management, artificial intelligence and the Foundation’s ERP system.
- Manages and leads IT staff, including training, mentoring and professional development.
- Works closely with executive leadership to align technology with the organization’s IT strategic plan and initiatives.
- Updates and implements the IT strategy, ensuring that a road map is aligned with and in support of the Foundation’s strategic plan.
- Oversees the IT staff in development and maintenance of its IT functions, notably, including ensuring the smooth operation of the core ERP system encapsulated by NetSuite, Salesforce and a cloud-based data warehouse.
- Serves on the executive team, advising the CEO and senior staff on all aspects of the Foundation’s IT operations utilizing their expertise.
- Collaborates with CEO and senior staff to understand IT needs and forms an IT vision that advances core goals of the Foundation and its unique departments.
- Works collaboratively and across departments to secure or develop technology solutions to support new lines of business or enhancements to existing processes when warranted, ensuring a cohesive, secure and maintainable IT environment.
- Champions IT across the organization, including through change management and educating and training staff on new systems and processes.
- Evaluates and recommends IT personnel needs (contract vs. employee) and provides leadership and direction as appropriate.
- Works closely with the director of IT to develop and manage IT department budget.
- Represents the Foundation and actively networks with peers in other community foundations as well as local, regional and national organizations to identify emerging trends and best practices to stay current on nonprofit- and foundation-related information technology challenges and opportunities.
- Establishes infrastructure to support the Foundation's IT efforts.
- Serves as the organization’s technology visionary and educator.
- Provides excellent client service and experience to all stakeholders by aligning technology to streamline, consolidate and access data, including financial, donor, grantee and Foundation information; ease access to data for internal and external stakeholders; improve the donor, fundholder, grantmaking and grantee experience by focusing on user experience; and improve constituent record keeping.
- Oversees the design, development, and implementation of new applications and system updates in collaboration with the IT team.
- Relies heavily on project management skills to coordinate, plan and prioritize IT needs across departments to meet organizational goals.
- Ensures an annual IT penetration test on the Foundation’s existing systems occurs with remediation of any corresponding identified issues.
- Oversees IT risk management and governance.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, information systems or equivalent experience. Masters preferred.
- Experience with system development and complex project management; knowledge of multiple architecture patterns for systems.
- Experience leading teams to design and deploy data, automation and AI programs.
- Demonstrated experience with complex systems implementation and maintenance in a distributed cloud environment.
- Seven-to-10 years of management/leadership experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience working across diverse teams.
- Strong commitment to customer service across complex organizations and constituencies.
- Demonstrated management skills.
- NetSuite, Salesforce, MS Azure Cloud experience preferred.
- Foundation and/or nonprofit experience preferred.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in database design and management and/leading data teams.
- Project management experience related to integration of new systems.
