2023 grant amount: $15,000 over two years

This grant will support the development of a program utilizing art as a therapeutic tool to create individual and collaborative works with youth artists.

"For many years I have worked with students who are considered to be at-risk, have mental health needs, and have learning disabilities," says Dameta Skinner. "Through my work, I have witnessed how the arts have transformed and restored children marginalized or disenfranchised in the educational system and society. It’s not a misnomer that the arts’ positive impact on mental health is well-established in art therapy."

Art therapy employs art techniques and evidence-based interventions that combat mental health issues. There is increasing evidence that validates the theory that the arts can be utilized for promoting positive mental health. The arts can connect with other disciplines to foster wellness, increased self-esteem, and positive racial identity.

"I believe that art creates a dialogue and self-awareness that can liberate and give students a voice to combat their mental health struggles and the many obstacles they face," says Skinner.
