Small and Mighty: Fishes and Loaves Cooperative Ministries

Fishes and Loaves offers programming and resources for food insecure individuals living in Hazelwood, Greenfield and Glen-Hazel.

The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Small and Mighty program awarded $9,100 to Fishes and Loaves Cooperative Ministries in 2020 and $20,000 in 2021. The organization provides fresh, healthy food to the Greater Hazelwood community at reasonable prices to ensure that fresh healthy options and social support are available in this urban food desert.

This grant will strengthen the organization’s operating procedures, data gathering and tracking, volunteer coordination and client intake to ensure that more people experiencing food insecurity are able to access healthy food. The organization aims to increase its volunteer capacity for food delivery and meal service and to stabilize its annual budget through increased individual donations and grants. It also seeks to strengthen relationships with individuals the organization serves by increasing social media engagement and participation in community meetings.

The Small and Mighty grants program, an outcome of the Foundation’s focus on poverty and inequality, has, as of Dec. 2020, awarded $1.6 million to nonprofit organizations with budgets of less than $600,000.
