The McKeesport Area High School I Will Succeed Scholarship fund was established in 2017 by McKeesport native Kathryn Munnell. Kathryn’s deepest wish was to provide opportunities for individuals to move ahead in life through education. Never forgetting the hard times that had befallen her hometown, Kathryn endowed this scholarship fund for students at McKeesport Senior High School.
Kathryn was born on April 26,1944, attended public schools in McKeesport and was a member of the first class to graduate from the new McKeesport Senior High School in 1962. She later attended William and Mary College in Virginia, where she majored in English. She then earned a master’s degree from Morgan University and taught English and Communications at the high school and college levels. Kathryn died in 2023.
Throughout her life, Kathryn was committed to serving the dispossessed here and abroad who had less in the way of material goods and opportunities than many Americans but no shortage of talent or grit. She served these populations overseas through the Peace Corps in the West Indies; the Lirhembe Girls Secondary School in Kenya; Phanat Nikhom Refugee Camp in Thailand; and World Vision in Vietnam.
