Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh awards $836,450 in latest slate of grants

PITTSBURGH, NOV. 1, 2021- Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh, a joint program of The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments, has awarded 127 grants totaling $836,450 in the initiative’s 2021 grant-making cycle, including $440,000 in operating support for individual artists and art programs.

Announcing the BIPOC Artist Micro-Grant program awardees

Seventy-five artists from the region who are Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) have received micro-grants of $1,000 each from The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Center for Philanthropy. The awards were funded through the Foundation’s Mac Miller Fund.

Announcing the latest Demarest Fund prize awardees

Three artists will receive awards of $18,000 each from the Eben Demarest Fund. The awards were announced by The Pittsburgh Foundation, which has overseen the Demarest awards since 2010. Typically, one awardee is selected every other year but last year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the selection committee was unable to meet. Funds unawarded last year carried forward and grew, making awards possible for three artists this cycle. The awardees are Pittsburgh-based visual artist Gavin Benjamin, Evanston, Illinois-based figurative realist painter Daniela Kovačić, and Brooklyn-based sculptor Kennedy Yanko.

A new arts funding initiative created by The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Center for Philanthropy will award 75 micro-grants of $1,000 to Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) artists to assist them in their work. Applications are open through July 23. Funding for the program is provided by The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Mac Miller Fund.
