The Pittsburgh Foundation

Off the Floor, Pittsburgh Endowment Fund

Established: 11/4/2014

For families who have recently experienced homelessness, have been evicted or lost their homes to catastrophic fires, one of the first priorities is finding a place to live. That place does not always come with the beds, dressers, tables and chairs necessary to make a space livable and, more often than not, these families cannot afford to purchase that furniture.

For 13 years, this organization has provided furniture to families making the transition from housing insecurity to stable living environments. Furniture has been donated by individuals, businesses and other organizations to hundreds of families and youth (or young adults) aging out of foster care. The organization was among 22 nonprofits awarded Small and Mighty funding in fall 2017.

Off the Floor Pittsburgh, a furniture bank established in 2004, saw the need and began donating furniture delivered by volunteers to families in more than 50 zip codes in the greater Pittsburgh area. Most of these families are single mothers with children, and the furniture donated through Off the Floor Pittsburgh offers comfort they might not otherwise experience.

Providing furniture is about more than having a place to sit or store clothing. It empowers community members by showing them dignity and respect and helps families discover or reclaim a sense of normalcy as they work to improve their situation.

The Off the Floor Fund directly supports this organization in acquiring and transporting furniture, which often has dozens of families on its waiting list. Donations to the fund quite literally lift fellow Pittsburgh community members up off the floor and toward a better life.
