John Lekse was a great family man who treasured his family and valued a good education. During his life, he never stopped learning or sharing the knowledge of what he learned with others. He encouraged his children to achieve the highest education level they desired and was still teaching them life lessons in his final days.
His next greatest joy was helping others. Whether it was working with his tools and assisting with projects or helping people through the fire department, he didn't care as long as he left people better off than when he arrived. It's also easy to see why the fire department was so important to him. Not only did it give him a chance to help others, but he gained more "family" through the people he met there.
When the question arose, "what can we do to honor John," it wasn't a hard decision for his family to make. The support for this scholarship fund that his family, friends and fellow firefighters gave was overwhelming. The original idea of a small, one-time gift quickly grew into the scholarship it is today. Give to the scholarship fund.
It is the family's hope that this scholarship fund will continue long into the future, assisting the volunteer men and women of the Upper St. Clair Volunteer Fire Department in their personal journey for knowledge. Learn more about the scholarship and apply.
