This week, the Pittsburgh Foundation’s Board and staff honor the life and dedicated service of Emeritus Board member Robert Bozzone, who died on June 7 at age 90.

As one of the most accomplished corporate leaders in the Pittsburgh region during his lifetime, Bozzone’s active board service ran from 1999 to 2008, and he distinguished himself in modernizing the Foundation’s investment and finance practices.

Drawing from his singular career at Allegheny Technologies (later becoming Allegheny Teledyne Corp.), where he rose over 54 years from the entry-level engineer ranks to become CEO and board chairman, Bozzone guided the first comprehensive review of the Foundation’s financial practices.

The result was the expansion of the Foundation’s oversight of finance and investments from one committee to two. He also led development of a more diverse investment platform and improved working relationships with the Foundation’s trustee institutions. He chaired the newly constituted Investment Committee beginning in 2004 and continued until his retirement from the Board.

“It is abundantly clear from the Foundation’s performance over time that we were extremely fortunate to have Bob’s innovative leadership and expertise on financial management and investments,” said Pittsburgh Foundation President and CEO Lisa Schroeder.

“While he was in the top tier of Pittsburgh’s business leadership, Bob viewed himself as just one among thousands of residents dedicated to improving community life. He wanted the Foundation to be the place that would always encourage a culture of generosity.”

A native of Glens Falls, New York, and resident of Lower Burrell, Westmoreland County, Bob and his wife, Irene, were married for 65 years. He is survived by her along with their three adult children and 10 grandchildren. As a family, their philanthropy extended well beyond Pittsburgh, supporting organizations nationally that focus on education, faith and family.
