NEIGHBORHOOD ALLIES Neighborhood Allies, as funder, consultant and lender, continues to make significant grants and loans that are transforming vulnerable neighborhoods.In 2017 and2018,the organization made grantsandloansof about $5.2 million to transformneighborhoodsacrossthe city.Major initiativesinclude the launch of the RealEstate Co-Powerment Series,an educationalplatform that demystifiesthe realestate development processforneighborsandcommunity organi- zations;funding andtechnicalassistance forsix temporarypublicartandplacemakingprojectsthat areharnessing creativity to helppeople reimagine theirneighborhoods;andcreation andleadership ofthe “AllIn Pittsburgh”equitable development initiative,which ensuresthat everyone — especially low-income residents,communitiesof colorand immigrants — can participate in andbenefit from the region’seconomictransformation. THE PITTSBURGH PROMISE ThePittsburghPromisecelebrated 10yearsofprovidingpost-second- aryscholarshipsto8,200students inthePittsburghPublicSchools system.OnMay2,theorganization hostedasigningdayeventat Soldiers&SailorsMemorial HallinOaklandwhere1,000 PittsburghPublicSchoolsstudents celebratedtheircommitments toapost-secondaryplan.The PNCFoundationannounceda $2.5millioncontributionatthat event,bringingthecompany’stotal supportto$3.8million.ThePromise launchedthePreferredCollege Partnersprogram,whichcallsfor certainpost-secondaryinstitutions toprovideadditionalfinancialaid androbustsupportservicesto scholarshiprecipients.TheAlumni ofthePromisegraduatesalso foundedanalumninetwork,which isenlistingrecentbeneficiaries to share their stories and demonstratethevalueofthe scholarshiptopotentialdonors. CHARLES E. KAUFMAN FOUNDATION In 2017, the Charles E. Kaufman Foundationfundawardedeightgrants totaling$1.8milliontoPennsylvania collegesanduniversitiesengagedin fundamentalscienceresearchinthe fieldsofbiology,chemistryandphysics, bywayofinnovativeprojectsthatcross interdisciplinaryboundaries,leadingto scientificbreakthroughs.In 2018,the fundawardedanadditional$1.9million, including$100,000forthenewlycreated IntegratedResearch-EducationGrant program,whichplacesundergraduate studentsalongsideinnovativescientists inresearch projects.
