2023 grant amount: $50,000 over two years

This grant supports "No Age to Beauty," a feature documentary film that seeks to understand the cultural nuances that influence perceptions of aging among the African & Black Diaspora by delving into the personal journeys of Black women with gray hair. From reassessing beauty to examining health impacts, we reveal the internal cracks beneath the phrase “Black don't crack.”

Through interviews and the documentation of their daily lives, three Black women will share their stories, including the artist's mother, who this project was first inspired by. Moreover, two hair stylists and an expert in African-American studies will be interviewed to provide historical and cultural context, as well as, insights into the experiences of Black women with gray hair.

"Through this project, I will have the opportunity to bring to fruition a message that I am passionate to share about Black women, as a young Black woman, at a high quality level and intentional manner that truly highlights the beauty and power of an underrepresented group," says Mensah-Agyekum. "My goals at the end of the day are to make an impact on my community and to expand my world as an artist, growing and learning at every step."
