2023 grant amount: $50,000 over two years

To support an artist residency for Idasa Tariq with Guardians Of Sound and Hip Hop Orchestra.

This project is a Residency for Idasa Tariq to work with Guardians Of Sound & Hip Hop Orchestra. Hip Hop Orchestra is a model for creative music learning and performance targeted at serving and employing primarily Black youth, teen and young adult mentors, and Black teaching artists. An integrated curriculum for in depth music instruction using Hip Hop samples/beats transcribed into music notation and arranged for acoustic and orchestral instruments has been implemented. It provides black youth with a means of learning, creating, performing and sharing their music. Ongoing individual and small group music instruction takes place daily with twice weekly full group orchestra. Hip Hop Orchestra is the only program of it's kind serving Pittsburgh's Black youth in terms of a creative hip hop orchestra model in contrast to the other types of youth orchestras the city has and supports. Additionally, Guardians of Sound actively seeks and provides performance work for Black teaching artists.
