Foundation’s Small and Mighty grants reach $1.25 million

PITTSBURGH, Dec.18, 2019 – The Small and Mighty grants program, a special initiative of The Pittsburgh Foundation’s 100 Percent Pittsburgh organizing principle, has awarded grants totaling $371,000 to 23 small, community-based nonprofits. This fourth round of grants brings the total awarded through the Small and Mighty program since its inception in 2016 to $1.25 million.

$100,000 Mac Miller Fund grant to support YMCA youth music programs

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 11, 2019 – A fund established last year at The Pittsburgh Foundation to honor the legacy of rapper Mac Miller has awarded $100,000 to music programs for teenagers and young adults at the Homewood-Brushton YMCA. The Mac Miller Fund was established at the Foundation by the family of the recording artist after his death at age 26 in September 2018.

New $5,000 Award Program to Honor Fearless Journalism

After reporter Sally Kalson’s death in 2014 from ovarian cancer, family and friends established the Sally Kalson Courage in Journalism Award Program at The Pittsburgh Foundation. The award will reach statewide to identify a broadcast, print or online media journalist annually, whose work embodies what Kalson was known for: “fearlessness, fortitude and excellence in taking on issues of our time.”

Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh announces $388,000 in grants

PITTSBURGH, Pa., Oct. 28, 2019 – Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh, a joint program of The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments, has awarded $388,000 to individual artists and art programs for the initiative’s fall 2019 grant-making cycle. Among the projects funded are an audio book and video series reinterpreting a book by Pittsburgh’s first African American medical doctor, an artist residency at the Pittsburgh Glass Center exploring plasma and neon light in glass, a community healing event honoring a young artist who died after a battle with depression, and a graphic novel about the experiences of growing up as a Black girl.
