William D. Markel Scholarship Fund

The William D. Markel Scholarship Fund was established at The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide multi-year scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students who reside in Butler County, PA., who have financial need, and who are pursuing degrees in nursing.

Multiple Awards: Up to $20,000 over 4 years
Award Type: Multi-Year (up to 4 years). Recipients must continue to meet the stated criteria.
Application Period Opens: 1/05/2026
Application Period Closes: 2/17/2026

Criteria

  • Reside in Butler County in Pennsylvania
  • Pursue a degree or studies in nursing.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Plan to attend or be attending a 2- or 4-year college or university in the United States.
  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have faced social, economic, or educational barriers due to systemic gender inequity.
