Neil Alexander: a story of strength in the face of tragedy

 

PITTSBURGH, Pa., Feb. 15, 2012 – On a sunny Pittsburgh afternoon in June last year, Neil Alexander received the kind of news we all dread. The progressive muscle-twitching he had experienced for the previous 18 months was diagnosed as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), the devastating and incurable condition better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

That is why The Pittsburgh Foundation has launched a new story-telling platform, Tell Me More, which is designed to complement our successful Pittsburgh on Video (POV).

Introduced as a central part of the Foundation’s new website, POV is a community resource for nonprofits and other organizations to tell their stories on video – stories about initiatives and developments that contribute to the health and vitality of our region.

William Dietrich leaves $18 million to The Pittsburgh Foundation


Major gift to address local community needs

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 18, 2011 – Former steel industry executive, the late William S. Dietrich II, has made plans to award gifts valued at more than $18 million to The Pittsburgh Foundation from his estate. The major share – over $10 million – will be used for grantmaking that addresses critical community needs in the Pittsburgh region.

Mellon Foundation grants $9 million to the Promise

Now businesses, individuals and families urged to help program reach its fundraising goal

 
PITTSBURGH, Pa., February 26, 2009 -- The Richard King Mellon Foundation has taken The Pittsburgh Promise closer to its current fundraising target with a grant to the program of $9 million over the next three years. The grant will be paid in annual installments of $3 million.
