According to the new PEL report funded in part by The Pittsburgh Foundation, the southwestern region of the state contains more Act 47 municipalities than any other region in the Commonwealth. These include the city of Aliquippa, Beaver County; Duquesne, Pittsburgh and the boroughs of Braddock and Rankin in Allegheny County; and New Castle, Lawrence County.

In an era when federal funding for basic scientific research is increasingly under threat, The Charles E. Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh program awards $170,000 in grants
